Ben Johnson, Patient Advocate

Ben is 47 and was diagnosed with FL in 2017. He underwent RCHOP chemotherapy treatment in 2017/18 and further chemo-immunotherapy in 2024. Ben successfully managed the physical recovery from his treatments, but failed to recognise the mental health implications a chronic illness can cause longer-term. The mental health issues associated with anxiety, fear and depression became more frequent for Ben during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ben took the steps to seek help through specific therapeutic support and wider organisational group support. In 2023 Ben raised money for the FLF – riding from London to Paris. He now has a much healthier lifestyle and positive outlook and acknowledges that mental health plays a crucial role in living and managing his FL. Read Ben’s full story here

Leah McAslan, Caregiver and Patient Advocate

Leah’s husband, Andrew, was diagnosed with stage 4 follicular lymphoma aged 25. He immediately received chemotherapy and immunotherapy, achieving no evidence of disease as a result of this treatment. Unfortunately, he relapsed only a year after this and has been on watch & wait for the last 2 years. His diagnosis was something they have coped with as a team. Dealing with this disease can be all consuming, not just for the patient but those who love them. Caregivers spend a lot of time feeling helpless, wishing there was more one could do and worrying about the future, whilst trying to be strong for their loved one. Understanding ways to support caregiver wellbeing whilst focusing on those being cared for, is crucial for emotional health.
